The terrace? The balcony? An opportunity to be enjoyed all year round

How to make the most of external areas, also in winter

Are you lucky enough to have an external area – garden, patio or terrace – and would like to be able to use it all year round? In winter the low temperatures keep us away from our balconies and terraces which, instead, should also be used in the coldest season, but in a different way. Let’s find out about 5 simple solutions that will allow us to exploit these external areas all through the year.

INSTALL WINDOWS WITH INVISIBLE FRAMES IN ORDER TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE VIEW AND THE LIGHT.

In order to make the most of balconies and terraces without resorting to invasive alterations, you just need to enhance these areas with wide windows with invisible frames. An all-glass balcony is the ideal choice for creating an impression of continuity with the exterior and a wide panoramic space: in this way, despite being external areas, balconies and terraces can seem to be an extension of the interior.

CREATING A WINTER GARDEN

Anyone who has a spacious balcony or terrace can put it to good use with the creation of a winter garden. This is a solution which, combined with a Jacuzzi, will allow you to obtain a true piece of luxurious paradise. You will be able to welcome guests and friends into your new winter garden, and surprise them with a dinner or aperitif on the terrace, and let the children play outside while staying in the warmth of the house. You will be able to read, study, devote time to your favourite hobbies, set up a gym or decide to install a small swimming pool in which you can, even only for a moment, imagine yourself to be somewhere else. Your winter garden, sheltered by the luminous transparency of glass, will give your home that extra space that was missing before, added breathing space and a completely new feel.

WARM IN THE GARDEN, EVEN IN WINTER

We can choose external fireplaces as a solution for warming ourselves up in the winter; they don’t need a flue, and can be fuelled with bioethanol for an ecological warmth that respects nature: can you imagine what it would be like to see the snow falling around you while you are relaxing comfortably on your sofa in the warmth of a crackling fire? Another interesting solution are infrared stoves which exploit the phenomenon of irradiance. They have very low heat dispersion and are powered by electricity so do not need gas cylinders and don’t produce free flames. The most common types are fixed to the wall.

SEARCH FOR SPECIAL FURNITURE FOR THIS UNIQUE SPACE

Furnishings can lend great character to a balcony. It’s a good idea to choose resistant materials for chairs and tables. Furniture with a mixture of wood and metal are currently fashionable. Balconies and terraces are synonymous with relaxation and tranquillity. Chairs, therefore, have to be arranged so as to optimise the line of vision. Use a table which is as large as possible, with a central support to increase space for the legs. A single piece of art of the wall could make the difference during the coldest months. Another thing: use cushions on a solid base for added comfort and perhaps for taking a nap!

FINISHINGS DEDICATED TO FLOORINGS

It’s essential to choose coverings suitable for exteriors, able to resist changes in temperature and which guarantee maximum reliability and safety. Ceramiche Coem has a wide range of solutions for exteriors.
It’s possible to choose finishings for internal and external areas from its collections, following the growing tendency of living in harmony with our surroundings, increasingly in tune with nature.

Thanks to product innovation, Coem produces beautiful ceramics which respect the environment at the same time. This is achieved as a result of a constant commitment on the part of the company, supported by constant technological research, which leads to the production of a “sustainable” porcelain stoneware, made with natural raw materials and the partial use of recycled materials. There are resistant and anti-slip ceramics, striking for their refined textures, but also with a minimalist taste, such as, for example, the MODICA collections (stone-effect stoneware with a Sicilian flavour) and LAGOS (stone-effect stoneware with natural and earthy shades) which make it possible to give a decisive personal touch to external areas. There are many other series, such as the new BLENDSTONE, an alchemy of textures and colours, and also ARENARIA, for a warm and captivating effect and many other collections, so that everyone can apply their own style also to external areas and create a green area to enjoy all year round.
