Fuorisalone: step into design

Fioranese in the limelight with a celebration of creativity

Every year, in conjunction with the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, staged in the pavilions of Rho Fiera, the city of Milan is brought to life by hundreds of events that format the Fuorisalone itineraries; installations and happenings organised in different areas of Milan that bring Design Week to life. This event, to be held from 17 to 23 April, is always eagerly awaited and animates all the main streets of the city. The new districts will host all the novelties and big surprises of Fuorisalone 2023, the theme of the 2023 edition being ‘Laboratorio Futuro’ or ‘Future Lab’. Let’s find out together which events should not be missed during these days when design takes centre stage in the city.

Unique and exclusive venues

During Milan Design Week, spaces that are usually closed are opened up, events will take you to old industrial buildings or ultra-modern lofts, renovated farmhouses or old palaces, deconsecrated churches or historical theatres, amazing museums or the extraordinary inner courtyards hidden behind high walls. When moving from one event to the next, remember to look around and lift your gaze to admire the buildings of old Milan, the Art Nouveau, the Art Deco, but also the new skyscrapers that, like it or not, are definitely transforming the city’s image. A very useful map for getting around and getting organised can be downloaded directly from the official Fuorisalone page, here is the link. Here are some suggestions to mark down in your notebook!

Alcova 2023: unusual and extraordinary spaces

For some years now, Alcova has been a platform for experimentation and social gatherings, a celebration of the unifying power of design that is capable of forging connections between talents from different backgrounds and places to pursue evolutions in the world of design. Alcova 2023 will use the former Porta Vittoria Slaughterhouse as a stage, for the last time before its planned redevelopment. This totally abandoned and suggestive site of about 15 hectares, just south of the railway link, will be brought back to life thanks to the more than 70 projects created by Alcova, with particular anticipation for the ‘Habitarematerials’ installation by Nemo Architects.

5 Vie Design Week

The 5-Vie district, which includes the area between Corso Magenta, Sant’Ambrogio and Le Colonne di San Lorenzo, returns to celebrate design at Fuorisalone 2023 with the tenth edition of 5VIE Design Week, the widespread event dedicated to signature and collectible designs, high craftsmanship and creativity in the broadest sense. In the historic centre of Milan, international curators, artists and designers have been invited to reflect on the theme ‘Design for Good’. There will be various exhibitions and events organised in studios, companies and independent artists in the 5Vie district that will allow people to reflect on design as a tool for creating and cultivating connections between people, in reciprocal care and for universal sustainability. Truly an itinerary in the name of sustainability not to be missed.

Brera Design District: creative thinking outside the box

There is a lavish programme of events in the Brera area during Fuorisalone 2023, the district with the highest concentration of design showrooms in the world. The title that holds all these exhibitions together is ‘The future is now’, which is a response to the theme chosen for this Fuorisalone 2023, which emphasises the importance of living our time consciously and creatively. Getting lost in the narrow and fascinating streets of the Brera district, the very heart of Milan’s history, is the best way to discover new, fully contemporary interior design proposals.

Dry days – tropical nights

Among the not-to-be-missed events within the Brera circuit will be ‘Dry days, tropical nights’, a colourful mega-installation created by artist Agostino Iacurci. The work will envelop the imposing tower in largo Treves, soon to be demolished, and will invite visitors to cross the threshold of the historic building, for the last time before it is demolished, and reflect on the current climate emergency. The intervention comes to life from the exterior façade and then continues inside the building in the large lounge, with a space that will envelop visitors in a spectacle of colour and light thanks to the numerous installations created for the occasion by the artist. Truly unmissable and extremely exciting.

In the heart of Milan, art meets ceramics

Via Solferino is located in the heart of the Brera district, one of Milan’s most historic streets, where you can really breathe in the history of this great city. Fioranese chose a unique location on this street to stage an event that does not end with the mere presentation of the new collections, but is really about art and the expression of creativity. ‘The Art of Tiles_Solferino 11’, is the name of the installation, created by the company, which will take place during Milan Design Week 2023. A luxury flat in the heart of Brera will be transformed into the setting to host a new collection of ceramics bursting with light, material vibrations and colour. This tactile and visual journey will speak of creativity and technology using a new language, an exclusive event that we invite you to see in person, to become part of the company’s history, of the history of Made in Italy design.
